Project : PDX Metro ReStore
Short Description: Portland Metro Habitat ReStore
Description: The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a recycled building materials re-sale center. We recycle overstock materials, seconds, and used or discontinued or salvaged building materials. The ReStore is a collaborative recycling and fund-raising effort of three area Habitat for Humanity affiliates: Portlan/Metro East, Willamette West, and Evergreen. All of our proceeds go toward helping to build new Habitat homes. These funds also help pay for permits and other building expenses. Habitat for Humanity's mission is to build simple, decent and affordable homes for low-income families. The ReStore is committed to achieving this mission in more ways than one. Not only do our proceeds go towards the construction of new homes, but we also provide an affordable alternative to landlords and homeowners who want to remodel or upgrade their properties. And, we help keep items out of the landfill by recycling/reclaiming as many materials as possible. Generall, 42% of landfill is building materials, excluding rubble. As a result of the ReStore's low impact practices, 950 tons of these materials were kept out of the landfill in 2005. With volunteer support, last year alone, the ReStore raised over $450,000 for the Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the Portland/Vancouver area! The ReStore works for Habitat for Humanity! During your volunteer day you can expect to unload donations, clean and organize the store, and assist customers in the store.
